According to the American Heart Association, nearly half of all adults with high blood pressure are women. A recent study found that Swedish massage significantly reduced blood pressure, heart rate and vascular endothelial adhesion (VCAM-1) in hypertensive women. Swedish massage is defined as using five styles of long, flowing strokes. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber) and vibration/shaking.
