Weight Loss 101
By Editorial Staff
Stumbling through your weight-loss journey, overwhelmed by what seems like hundreds upon hundreds of weight-loss diets, strategies and advice columns? Have no fear – you can steady yourself and get on track for long-term weight-loss success with three simple dietary principles supported by research.
Fewer calories, more protein and more fiber – that's the not-so-secret "secret" to weight-loss success. Among participants in a self-directed program, the ones who experienced the greatest success over a two-year period in terms of weight loss consumed the most protein and fiber, while keeping their calorie counts low.
In fact, after only one year, 41% of participants who successfully lost weight utilizing the above strategy had lost 12.9% of their body weight. By comparison, participants who did not lost only a little over 2% of their body weight.
But that's not all. Researchers discovered two other variables that appeared to increase participants' ability to stick with their weight-loss plan: personalization and flexibility. It all goes back to what this article started with: the weight-loss journey. The most effective weight-loss strategies don't lock you into a rigid plan; nor do they apply to everyone else. This research study, which appears in Obesity Science & Practice, supports that premise. It's your journey, so finding out what works best for you is the key to success.
Where are you on your weight-loss journey? If you're struggling, talk to your doctor about these study findings – and then determine your best course of action. Remember, the most successful weight-loss plan is the one that works for you, even if it doesn't work for anyone else.
